Q: Is pet obesity a big problem?
A: Obesity is no longer a problem confined to humans. Just as Australians have become heavier over the years, so too have the nation’s pets, with more than 41 per cent of dogs and 33 per cent of cats either overweight or obese. Obesity can be a serious health concern for pets.
Q: Research shows that overweight pets are far more likely to suffer from:

- Joint problems
- Skin problems
- Reproductive disorders
- Inactivity
- Decreased quality of life
- Neurologic disorders
- Increased surgical risk

Q: What causes obesity?
Most obesity is caused simply because a pet eats more calories than he or she needs. This means too much food, too little exercise or a combination of both. The excess calories, unable to be used, are stored by the body as fat.
Q: What special diet food is available to help my pet lose weight?
You should start your pet off on a special food formulated to aid weight loss as decided in consultation with your vet. For example pets may be prescribed the Hill’s Prescription Diet r/d formulation food, which contains increased fibre and added L-carnitine with adequate vitamins, minerals and other nutrients. Prescription Diet r/d will allow the pet to eat the normal quantity of food while reducing energy intake and will limit the deposition of body fat. Cats may also be prescribed Prescription Diet m/d food formulation which is a low carbohydrate option. Feline m/d has been nicknamed the “Catkins” diet.
