A balanced diet containing the essential nutrients in correct proportions and fresh water available at all times is all a healthy bulldog needs. Many dog owners feed their dog just once a day but many bulldoggers prefer to feed their bulldogs two meals daily. Spreading the amount of food over several meals helps to reduce the occurrence of flatulence and gastric torsion.
Bulldogs, like all dogs, are omnivores and require a mixture of proteins, carbohydrates, fats, minerals and vitamins. Proteins are a source of amino acids, which the dog's body needs to perform vital functions and rebuild its tissues. Carbohydrates provide the fuel for the production of energy. Fats are also a good source of energy and fatty acids. They are also essential for the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins and improve the digestibility of the diet. Minerals and vitamins have important regulatory functions in the body. These nutrients must be provided together in optimal proportions to be most effective in the diet.
